whether it's the Ubers or the Snapchats they're probably still undervalued astonishingly as it may seem right and and um please please say that one more time Uber is undervalued please that's right CU you own some shares right
like you know Microsoft was convicted twice of antitrust violations right being a big bad mon Monopoly Monopoly convicted twice did the government any of the government's actions change that no not not a bit right they had these rules about the browser put the browser and you can't put Windows Media Player in very minor stuff what really changed it was just technology changed the internet exactly the internet changed Microsoft didn't get the boat get on the boat boat left without them and that's
they actually paid us 20 million to change our name too
well it turns out if you give a company Microsoft a 20-year Head Start it's pretty tough to catch up
what I find fascinating there is there's two Gatekeepers it's Android and Google right I mean Android and Apple I'm sorry uh uh Google uh uh of course owns Android um those are the new gate you know when we were growing up and and you talked about mobile it was Verizon and T-Mobile you had to go those were The Gatekeepers and they would actually cut a deal with you they were more than willing to cut some kind of a deal with these new ones there's no deal to be had other than like going to Facebo
I think the Challenger is the smartphone the smartphone changes everything it really does and and the search dominance that we see on the desktop is not prevalent on the smartphone so much
Google's not a true Monopoly yes they do have enormous market share but listen that's part of the free market
the EU now is supposedly coming down with a 6 billion fine which is like 10% of their revenue or something like that it's not di Minimus
Google's in a tough situation if they do nothing uh they will absolutely get you know investigated by FTC and action taken and so they have to play the game to some level
it was also been revealed that Google was visiting the White House twice a week for over a year
Google is tremendously powerful um you know and it's so ironic I find it so uh uh hypocritical for Google because they will penalize your site if you scrape content from another site right they will penalize you and say hey we're going to push you down the rankings but that's Google's entire business
well uh um I was reading this report that says somewhere around I think I want to say is around 35% of the Google queries are now answered on the page yep so and where
imagine if there was a world where there was no Google how much traffic would your website get not much
well think of us like Google we are Google for radio right uh so how does Google make money well it's advertising
it's a really messy problem that's probably why Google and doesn't doesn't do it because it's very messy it's not like all the data is sitting there on a web server for you to grab
they actually adverti against porn I believe which was always I thought somewhat hypocritical but because they will ding you for having adult content on your page if you're using AdWords but they will actually sell AdWords to on porn searches on their own site which kind of weird
they w't link directly to MP3 to protect themselves probably to you know appease the music industry right cuz they have Google play so the in the Google Play does not want you to right
I love rafe's point about the the impactful thing here would be pervasive Wi-Fi that would put huge pressure on the Verizon's of this world who you know you've got uh two three operators that control mobile internet access and so if Google were to create pervasive Wi-Fi clouds to me that puts huge pressure on the Verizon at t uh att's of the world
I personally think they're looking for what's the killer app on Fiverr I still don't know what it is ... I think it's just an experiment
I think they're just playing it out and seeing how it it it will come together and also putting pressure on the incumbents as well
at this point to me it's simply a prototype this is just a little lab thing for Google I don't think they have lots of foresight about hey we're going to put fiber in the top 50 metros or anything like that I think they're just saying hey what happens if we can control the whole stack all the way to the end point in your in your home so I I don't think there's much more thought
Well, I think not as big as maybe you're suggesting, because for the first time they've got real competition. You know, there's no real competition for the iPad. The size, all the features it has, it's stand-alone. But as you get smaller, you know, that Nexus 7, that's a capable product. The Kindle, the variations of Kindle, those are some capable products. So, I think they're going to find a lot more resistance, a lot more competition at the smaller size.
there was a board control right they wanted board control and I said Hey listen if if you're if you have only 20% of the company you know it doesn't make sense to have board control
they had moved like lightning to get me an offer in a week for $10 million and I thought why would I possibly give up my leverage you know and I said no no I'm not going to sign a no shop
I said I like the 10 million part I'm not so keen on the 12 million part I think it should be a $40 million pre-money valuation
I saw some other companies like liquid audio uh raising capital and while I thought their business didn't make any sense I was smart enough to know you want to have as as much you know as many bullets as as the guy you you're you're battling against
