I'm an iPhone user and I'm start using Google Maps I start using Google I start using Gmail I start using Chrome I get educated on all that and if they start fixing like they started to fix the operating system problems in Android like updating and stuff like that and the hardware gets so much better then you're going to look at it and be like okay I can get an iPhone and pay $200 more or I can pay $200 less I'm using the same apps why should I buy the and the HTC has you know a couple more mega

they absolutely have to be competitive the the the problem is if say if say they had never made Apple Maps and a year down the line Google says we're going to yank it now now you have IOS with no mapping product of any kind shape or form and it's all totally completely screwed
Facebook will continue to grow its user base, advertising revenue, and mobile revenue.
What happened: Facebook's user base, advertising revenue, and mobile revenue all grew substantially from 2012 onwards; mobile ad revenue in particular surged from near-zero to account for the vast majority of the company's total advertising income.
Verify at source ↗Facebook's stock will decline to $10 or lower after its IPO.
What happened: Facebook’s IPO price was $38, and the stock never fell to $10 or lower; it has stayed well above that threshold ever since.
Verify at source ↗Apple will have an exceptionally strong financial quarter.
What happened: Apple has delivered several quarters with revenues and earnings above analyst expectations since 2012, but not every quarter met the subjective threshold of “exceptionally strong.”
Verify at source ↗Sam Altman from Y Combinator fame now he did stripe and his position in that became worth 25 million or 50 million or something
those crazy five customers you just ask yourself can those F five crazy people turn into the maybe 40 people in the room who are hosts and then 90% of the room has stayed in Airbnb at this point
I don't even need to understand if Airbnb is going to work if that many people are going to raise their hand but of course in the beginning it was just those five crazy people who would stay in the apartment with the person now those five crazy people if you talk to them they would be able to sit there and tell you why this is such a great idea
the idea that you would allow somebody to sleep on your couch or in your extra bedroom when I heard that idea and I didn't have a chance to invest but I heard the idea very early and I was like oh like a serial killer
my Uber position my Thumbtack position became worth 200 million
you have to go to Twitter tomorrow you have to close this deal time running out this is going to be one of the most important companies of our time
and sure enough I was right but it's a 50 million doll mistake
you're going backwards in your career you did blogging and that was a big success you sold to Google and now you've taken the blog post out and you've left just the title if Twitter succeeds it's going to be a cacophony of idiots people who have no ability to write a paragraph are going to be up all day and all night writing fragments of sentences like complete idiots it's going to destroy society
I think it's a particularly brilliant strategy on Google's part
I'm an iPhone user and I'm start using Google Maps I start using Google I start using Gmail I start using Chrome I get educated on all that and if they start fixing like they started to fix the operating system problems in Android like updating and stuff like that and the hardware gets so much better then you're going to look at it and be like okay I can get an iPhone and pay $200 more or I can pay $200 less I'm using the same apps why should I buy the and the HTC has you know a couple more mega
it's not just the apps the problem is for the first time the hardware has competitors nothing competed with the iPhone before now there's actual competitors
I'm a huge Apple fan I have every iPad the mini iPad every iPhone but I just got the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and it's replaced all my other devices
I'm not I'm not sure wayes competes with Google Maps though like I I I would then you know I use Google Maps for all of my GPS like uh functionality when I'm on the phone but there's plenty of GPS functionality you can get from other providers as well Google Maps doesn't have the Monopoly on it and uh you know Apple failed building their own product they could probably buy for a lot cheaper than 750 million
they absolutely have to be competitive the the the problem is if say if say they had never made Apple Maps and a year down the line Google says we're going to yank it now now you have IOS with no mapping product of any kind shape or form and it's all totally completely screwed
they probably should take more risk but then there's the question of what they should take risk on they don't want to be a Yahoo where you buy these enormous things that you then write down to zero
think about what Apple's biggest acquisition in their history was it was next in order and they bought that for less than $500 million so you don't really see apple spending a lot of money for speculative VC hyped Acquisitions I mean their last kind of speculative Acquisitions are particle and Chomp we don't know what the terms were but there were certainly less than $100 million or $50 million I I've never seen Apple do a kind of crazy acquisition on a company with one million in revenues
they're willing to pay three or four times as much as they're worth just to differentiate and stop Google Maps from infecting the iOS ecosystem
apple needs something to differentiate itself for maps maps is just terrible and without something like a ways especially a ways they're never going to win against Google right now just it's embarrassing how Bad Apple Maps is compared
they turned off the zigat app which is stupid
I think it's a particularly brilliant strategy on Google's part
I'm an iPhone user and I start using Google Maps I start using Google I start using Gmail I start using Chrome I get educated on all that and if they start fixing like they started to fix the operating system problems in Android like updating and stuff like that and the hardware gets so much better then you're going to look at it and be like okay I can get an iPhone and pay $200 more or I can pay $200 less I'm using the same apps why should I buy the and the HTC has you know a couple more megapi
the truth is anybody at any point in time could just type in bing and I've done that and Bing's good Bing's a great product in fact Bing's got some Pro pieces that are better than Google and so there's a self the market will self-correct
there is self-correcting processes here which is Google started to look like a bully between Panda which was like unnecessarily harsh you know they could have told people that that was coming they could have not made it as brutal to people um and you know when you're scraping other people's content and you move them down the page like you know you have to be a little bit magnanimous and I think Google is starting to learn how to do that
I do think Google had some bad behavior and they're bad communicators and I think that they're becoming better communicators but they did do some bad things James like they were scraping the content from Yelp using it in their review system and then pushing Yelp down the page and putting their stuff on top now that was UNC and they did a lot of like bad behavior after Yelp wouldn't sell to them so it was particularly vindictive
I sort of feel like the human race loses with issues like this like just the way this is worded like the FTC closes its investigation I feel like I'm watching Homeland and Google some sort of terrorist trying to to rape all their users when the reality is this is capitalism like they should just shut down the FDC of course Google wasn't guilty of anything
if you've played with that Windows operating system for mobile it is buttery I mean it is as nice as oh it's nicer design wise and much more avant-garde and beautiful if you were to show the Android device the Apple device and the Microsoft device and say who made each one you would say Apple use the products
they hired David who was running all of content for AOL for a while
their UI and their interface is not that bad but honestly I just want used to be bad now it's I just want Netflix but like they have a button on their remote that says like social TV and like you click on it and like you're doing some yahoo thing like there's still Yahoo integration was terrible but now when you turn on the smart TVs you see Hulu BBC Netflix I mean it's a pretty compelling experience
I have the Galaxy 2 tab and I've got the Samsung like crazy LED TVs and I've bought three of them now I won't buy anything but Samsung TV
now you have Samsung making really beautiful products and they hired David who was running all of content for AOL for a while yeah and they seem to be the one company that feels the most Apple or Sony like to me and I mean Sony in the building a product that you know you can trust like I feel like Samsung now I have the Galaxy 2 tab and I've got the Samsung like crazy LED TVs and I've bought three of them now I won't buy anything but Samsung TV and it's like it feels to me like Samsung is going
it turned out worse I can guarantee you if I'm searching for let's say a cooking recipe I don't want to see what any of my friends have to say about that recipe I'd rather go straight to the experts
this Google Plus integrated with search is a much more important issue I think where are they kind of defaulting into an inferior search product by by using Google Google search results
I think I think they're basically streamlining so that they're focusing on mobile search Chrome and uh Google Plus so they're basically getting rid of everything else
if they've only got 200 million in revenue or 150 million Revenue it certainly is
Twitter is still kind of the RSS on steroids that everyone's using as opposed to Google Plus
when you start adding background checks and insurance into it uh all a sudden it's not going to be cost effective and so then you lose the competitiveness versus a hotel if you have to do a $20 background Che so this might be the real issue with the business it might not be a valid business versus you know some other types of Home Sharing sites or hotels I dis see if it's really a valid business model
Google is 15 times next year's earnings
but I mean when you start adding background checks and insurance into it uh all a sudden it's not going to be cost effective and so then you lose the competitiveness versus a hotel if you have to do a $20 background Che so this might be the real issue with the business it might not be a valid business versus you know some other types of Home Sharing sites or hotels I dis see if it's really a valid business model
I I think this was a very poor response I think this is the equivalent of letting all the internet trolls out there who anonymously anonymously trash everyone else just inviting them into your home I and I don't think their damage control is sufficient I think what they have to do is do some a little bit more checking on who they're letting to go into your home and uh I think this was insufficient at this point
I don't think so because for most searches anyway people click on the very first item you know on the first page will this change that a little bit of course but at the end of the day you know I do social search on Twitter and Facebook I've already have my my venues that I do social search on and with Google I'm almost I can't imagine anything that's going to change my behavior much from clicking on one of the first two or three items
if demand media is saying we've cracked the code we've mastered Google I mean Google's going to [ __ ] slap you right right and that's what happened
I think they were sending a message to demand and to people who were a little bit worried about the concept of content farming now that demand was getting so much press so Google wanted to make sure with demand getting so much attention and the whole concept of a Content Farm getting attention that listen we're we're thinking about your search results we're we're protecting you the the user you're not going to be sucked into the content Farms
I think it's interesting that all these updates were timed right around the demand media IPO where content Farms were kind of getting a lot of press so I think Google a little bit piggybacked off that and wanted to to get in on the action of of the hype that was surrounding this IPO and they did it successfully
if I email somebody at Twitter or I email somebody at Facebook I get a response immediately by email if I email somebody at Google I generally get a response after four emails it is really a different culture
it's just not their DNA the the social part you can't quantify the way that they have to quantify everything as Engineers you're saying that there because there's so many Engineers over there and it's such an awkward group of people who are not social that are based on numbers and Facebook is not done that way let me give you it's emotional social is emotional they don't it's not in their nature
Google I'll give you credit for that one you even went after Opera because they were showing ads in their product
no one publisher affects the way Google makes decisions the fact of the matter is everybody on the planet use Google for search and they've got a big responsibility they got to provide the best results
with Google I'm almost I can't imagine anything that's going to change my behavior much from clicking on one of the first two or three items
Google is so far behind on social is this any kind of a game changer I don't I don't think so
